Decent open play in Chicago & the suburbs? - 09-20-2006, 04:30 PM

Anyone know of any decent level open play in Chicago or the surrounding suburbs? I've got a couple that I play fairly regularly, the best of which is on Wednesday nights at the Mount Prospect RecPlex. 7:00ish - 11:00 or so, it's $8 for non-residents. There's typically only 2 courts running, which can make the wait for a game on the "A" court a little lengthy if there's 4 teams (and very occasionally 5) wanting to play on it. But, the level of play is definately a solid USAV "A" with a smattering of "AA" level guys (and some girls. We occasionally get a former NCAA Women's Divison I champion on the court. She always apologizes that she's not doing more with my sets. Hell, I'm just happy to be setting her. )

I also sometimes play at a little gym in Fremont Center, which is NW of the city out sorta by Vernon Hills. We play from 7:00 till 9:00 on Monday nights. I think it's like $3 or something. It's an older crowd but the level of play is generally at a "BB" level. The last half an hour or so is typically "A" level though as some of the creakier older guys sit out.

Anyone? Anyone been to Glenview on Sundays? Anywhere in the city itself?

The Recplex is still the best open gym around in the area. The cost is pretty steep though. I haven't really played indoor in the burbs as much this year. Parking is very scarce in the Lincoln Park area if you don't get there around quittin' time.

Here is a list of open gyms that I compiled. It's kinda outdated, but I'm sure most of the info is still correct.

Nice list! Unfortunately none of the places you listed are in Chicago so kind of a bummer for me =(

Maybe I should start one for Chicago, hmmmm.

To be honest, open gyms aren't really the thing in the city. There are leagues going on every day, though. I've heard of an open gym type thing on Monday at Montrose and Lincoln. There are rumors of open gyms at health clubs, but I wouldn't rely on a "health club" open gym being very competitive. I play on Saturday mornings in an "invite only" but I'm a snob and won't share that info.
