If I read that right, the AVP moved because:

a) no beer allowed, and
b) no cash subsidies.

Interesting.

Seaside is not quite the same as Belmar, should be a new experience. All in all though, I'm just glad NJ is on the schedule and will be counting the days after Fort Lauderdale!

Hey Volleychick,
I have never been to either venue so I am not sure what the change will really mean. As a local can you give us a quick idea whether you think it is a good move and why?

Belmar was much better, Seaside is like Coney Island in Brooklyn, kinda sleazy and run down, this is just my opinion. I don't know what Belmar was thinking letting it go. The problem with Seaside and the Coney Island events is going to be parking, with thousands more people going for the event people are going to have a major hassle and may not go next year. Expect major parking problems and travel delays.

Seems to me the AVP has selected more tourist type areas for their events this year. The IL, NY and NJ events are all directly in carnival type atmospheres, I'm not sure of the other event sites.

To think a beach is a beach no matter where it's located is a bad business practice.

Don't know just a thought.....

I'm still going though....

No more cast, no more crutches, no more wheel chair, and yes more volleyball!

Mr. Owl, how many licks does it take to get to the Tootsie Roll center of a Tootsie Pop?

Belmar is a quaint little town with more B&B's than hotels, the boardwalk is mostly open, very few businesses on it, a couple of bars and restaurants, but mostly residential. Seaside is more...commercial I guess? The full on boardwalk with games (complete with the dude on the mike yelling at you as you walk by), rides, hotels, bars, and (at least it used to be) 30 minute waits for the bathroom - not too convenient when you're in a tournament : p Pretty much the polar opposite of Belmar.

It didn't come as a big surprise that they moved it this year, it almost didn't happen last year according to the owner of the B&B I usually stay at. Driving in for the tournament was an experience - unless you get there really early. I've had friends drive around for over an hour looking for parking when arriving later in the day. So I guess from a resident point of view, it probably was a nightmare weekend.

I think lodging will be a lot easier to find since Seaside has a ton of hotel/motels. But even that is different, I had to send a money order deposit for half the total, and have myself and the others in the room sign a lease and mail it back. One place I looked at required renters to wear wristbands at all times and guests had to pay to come on the property...and it didn't look like Club Med to me : p

I'm sure it will be a good time, there's not much better than AVP weekend at the Jersey Shore!
