Hello From Canada - 04-08-2007, 05:39 PM

My name is Colin and I'm a volleyball coach in Winnipeg, Canada. I play basically recreational ball, i.e. no specific positions. Never did play in school or college and picked up on the sport about 12 years ago. Fell in love with it and began coaching. Have been coaching for the past 9 years, including 4 years in club.

Glenn e-mailed me to inform me about this site, so I'm checking it out.

There could be worse things to be addicted too... I guess? Hahah, nice to have you around.

What age do you coach? How are the clubs up in Canada?

I've seen a few clubs up there and played some too. Providence is actually going to be attending the nationals in Lousiville next week, can't wait to see what they bring to our division.

My volleyball resume

I was assistant coach for varsity guys high school in my first year.
For four years after that, I coached girls at a private high school with a enrollment of under 300 between grade 7 and grade 12. I coached JV, then varsity, then JV again.

Left the school and got into the club scene. For parts of two seasons with one club, I assisted with 15 & 16 year old girls. During that time, I got on with coaching JV girls at a local public high school for three years.

The club & I parted ways kind of mutually. I joined another club that was associated with a local university and assisted with 17 year old girls for 2 seasons. Unfortunately, I was doing administrative work and not so much coaching, so I left that club.

This past year, I coached grade 9 girls (a bit of a change) at the high school level. I started to get burned out from coaching (especially after the experience with the last club I was with), so I will not be coaching at the school anymore - but I may assist depending on if I'm asked by a buddy who coached varsity there for the same time I was there. However, I got the itch back and I'm helping a 17 year old girls team with club. I've known the coach for a while and she was doing it on her own, so I offered my help.

Now with my detailed resume overwith onto your other questions. Club scene here is similar to the US except our season is about a month shorter. We start practicing in January (have tryouts at the beginning of December) and the season finishes with Nationals in late April to late May (depending on the age group).

Tim, I noticed you mentioned Providence. I'm wondering if they are from Canada and where they might be from.

I also noticed you're a setter with UMass Lowell. What division is the school in? How did you guys do this year?

Do you coach as well? What age groups? I'll assume you coach guys.

Talk to you soon.

Colin

Uhhh... I'd assume Providence Canada? Thats all it says for information I can find.

Yea, we did well this year - played D1 club ball and broke 500 - we got spanked in regionals but are going to nationals in two days.

I sorta helped coach this year, I used this year to help pass on the club so I didn't do as much as last year.

If it's the Providence I'm thinking of, which is a seminary/religious college, then it's just a bit south of where I am.

Were you running the club or just kinda coaching as well?

Colin
