Setting A Overhead Pass - 07-18-2007, 06:55 PM

HELLO, I HAVE PROBLEMS DOING A REVERSE BACKS SET.

WHEN I AM IN THE READY POSITION I TRY TO KEEP MY FEET FIRMLY PLACED APART, KNEES BENT, HANDS ABOVE MY HEAD, CORRECTLY SPREADING MY FINGERS 6-8 INCHES APART. MY FINGERS NEVER SEEM TO ROLL THE BALL OFF INTO A CORRECT REVERSE SET. ANY SUGGESTIONS TO EXECUTE THIS BETTER?
VERY FRUSTRATING I KNOW I COULD DO THIS BETTER? HELP?

Rotate your wrists. That's about all I've got though... I'm just a dumb OH. There are a grip of setters on the board though that can offer more advice.

I do know that as a defender/blocker I'm reading your hands and the less 'other movement' in your body I can read the better.

Thank you - 07-19-2007, 11:08 AM

Thank you for the reply this afternoon I am playing with some people in Chesire.

OK your no dumb OH (SLAP on the wrist)..any playing can be improved..hard-work does pay off I always say. I prefer to have a good hot game rather than a boring rec. game. Though you meet good people anywhere.

Cheers! If you know of any play on the beach let me know.

I'm a dumb MH (it's the MH's that are dumb, not the OH, NERT) but if you are "rolling the ball off", isn't that an extended contact and a lift?

I bump set everything so what do I know?

Yelling already?

I'm no setter...

* Your feet should not be firmly placed, but better to say on the balls of your feet or toes as opposed to having the heels on the floor.
* Six to eight inches apart is a big setting window. I've got pretty small hands and I've got my fingers about two/three inches apart only, sometimes even barely touching.
* I don't roll the ball on my fingers, that's just poor ball contact. If I rolled the ball without very fast hand speed, that means the ball came to rest and got redirected - lift.
* Superhero takeoff. Don't bother trying to conceal the back set, in fact exaggerate it. Big arch in back. Arms straighten out after ball released. Everything straing on that imaginary line, 90 degrees perpedicular to the shoulders.

Me eat meat in team.

Soft Hands - 07-19-2007, 12:50 PM

Correct. This is also referred to as a Reverse Set in some places where I have played. Bumping is fine I never diss anyone for putting a positive spin on thing. Whatever works and gets the point!

Though I prefer 5-1 formats with a single setter game and others want 4-2 format. Less confusing but too each is own.

What is it with the thinking your are dumb today? Does everyone pick on themselves God come on guys just try to buck up! You would think your need a cat of nine to whip your spirit up! Thats a joke

I guess I better get my new ball soon and work on my setting!

BACK TO WORK LATER

Stong Hands - 07-19-2007, 02:15 PM

If you use just your wrists and extend you hands backward the backset will be more deceptive. This takes strong fingers though and is very diffucult to do with a high pass. Exaggerating the follow through is fine so long as you try to avoid telegraphing your intentions prior to the set.

Are we talking about back-setting or "Setting a overhead pass"? I'm not sure what an overhead pass is.

When back setting, be sure to let your Opp or MH know what they are in for. Nothing sucks more than the perfect back set only to have the hitter sleeping and not able to execute on it.

As a Opp hitter you should always be expecting the backset. As an MH you should be in the air already by the time I touch the ball. And stop stealing my sets; Bad Middle!!

Since when have you been putting up 1 balls? And if I am in the air before you release the ball, I am gonna be mad early (like I always am).
